Caretaker Prime Minister Anwar-ul-Haq Kakar announced on Friday the extension of Lt. Gen. Nadeem Anjum’s term as the Director General of Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) for an additional year. This decision comes in the wake of heightened terrorist activities posing a threat to the nation.
Lt. Gen. Nadeem Anjum, who was originally slated to retire this month, will now continue to lead the ISI, a key intelligence agency, for another year. Prime Minister Kakar, while speaking to Arab News, emphasized the necessity of maintaining policy continuity during a critical period marked by increased terrorist attacks.
During the interview, PM Kakar highlighted the importance of preserving the ongoing strategies and policies, stating, “Try to grasp the point about policy continuity. Any system prefers and supports the concept of continuity.” He further added, “You want to have a continuation of the process, and for you, the continuation of that process is important so that the idea, practice, or brand gets entrenched.”
Lt. Gen. Nadeem Anjum assumed the role of DG ISI on November 20, 2022, and was originally scheduled to retire in October. The decision to extend his tenure reflects the government’s commitment to addressing the current security challenges with a sense of stability and consistency.
The move to retain Lt. Gen. Nadeem Anjum at the helm of ISI underscores the government’s proactive stance in ensuring the effectiveness of intelligence and counter-terrorism efforts in a volatile environment.
