Karachi has reported its first confirmed case of Congo virus for the year, raising concerns among health officials. A 32-year-old man was admitted to Jinnah Hospital after suffering from high fever and diarrhea. Following diagnostic tests, the patient was confirmed to have contracted the Congo virus and has been moved to the hospital’s Intensive Care Unit (ICU) for further treatment.
The Congo virus, often associated with the Eid al-Adha festival due to increased animal activity, is known for its transmission from animals to humans and potential person-to-person spread. This outbreak comes in the wake of a similar case reported in November 2023, involving a 42-year-old resident of Karachi’s East District.
In response, health authorities are emphasizing the importance of preventive measures. Residents are advised to avoid close contact with animals, especially during the festive season when the risk of infection is heightened. Health officials are also calling for increased vigilance and adherence to safety guidelines to curb the virus’s spread.
