At the Geneva International Motor Show, Chinese automaker BYD has turned heads with the debut of its latest innovation: the Yangwang U8 SUV. This luxury plug-in hybrid SUV boasts a unique feature – it can float in water, providing an added layer of safety in case of accidents involving water.
Weighing in at a substantial 3.5 metric tons, the Yangwang U8 is equipped with four electric motors, one in each wheel. This impressive setup not only contributes to its ability to float but also enables remarkable maneuvers such as sideways parking and executing a complete turn in one spot.
While currently exclusive to the Chinese market, BYD is considering expanding availability to other regions in the future. However, adjustments may be made to meet European standards if the SUV hits European markets. Since its launch in November, BYD has already sold over 3,600 U8 SUVs in China, with a price tag of approximately $152,550.
In addition to the U8, BYD introduced the Yangwang U9 sports supercar in China, with pre-orders starting at $240,000, catering to the high-end market. The company is contemplating bringing its luxury Yangwang brand to Europe, although its current focus remains on the development of electric and hybrid vehicles, as well as the launch of their premium Denza brand. Stay tuned for more updates on BYD’s innovative ventures in the automotive world.
