PESHAWAR: Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi has announced the establishment of a state-of-the-art university for modern journalism and media studies, dedicated to the memory of late journalist Arshad Sharif.
Speaking at a press briefing on Tuesday, the chief minister said the initiative aims to promote ethical journalism, digital literacy, and investigative reporting in Pakistan. He added that the university will offer specialized programs in media technology, communication strategy, and press freedom studies.
“Arshad Sharif was a symbol of fearless journalism in Pakistan,” said CM Afridi. “This institution will honour his legacy by empowering future journalists with truth, courage, and professionalism.”
According to the provincial government, the University of Modern Journalism will be built in Peshawar, equipped with advanced digital media labs, newsroom simulations, and research centers focusing on responsible reporting and fact-based journalism.
The announcement has been widely welcomed by journalists’ associations and media students across the country, who view it as a positive step toward strengthening journalism education and protecting media independence.
