Several companies in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) are facing challenges in obtaining work visas for potential employees, particularly South Asian nationals. While rumors circulated about a visa halt for Indian, Pakistani, and Bangladeshi nationals, authorities and visa experts deny such claims.
The issue came to light when businesses approached the Human Resources and Emiratization (MoHRE) for visa applications and were advised to prioritize demographic diversity in their hiring practices. The MoHRE emphasized the need for companies to ensure a balanced representation of nationalities among their workforce.
Firose Khan, Managing Director of Dubai-based Profound Business Service, shared his experience, stating, “I gave a visa to an Indian for a job in a company where the majority were of the same nationality. Soon after, I received a message to maintain diversity quotas.”
Abdul Gafoor, General Manager of Al Mas Businessmen Service, pointed out that many UAE companies heavily rely on employees from India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh. As a result, these companies now face limitations on obtaining new visas for individuals from these countries. Gafoor clarified that this restriction doesn’t apply to companies within free zones, and they continue to face no issues obtaining work permits.
The Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratization clarified that the diversity policy aims to integrate social and cultural diversity into the fundamental values of private sector companies. This initiative involves diversifying the cultural backgrounds of employees, ensuring equal employment opportunities, and concurrently promoting the empowerment of UAE citizens in alignment with prescribed Emiratisation percentages.
While concerns have been raised about potential impacts on businesses, the authorities assert that the policy is essential for fostering a more inclusive work environment that reflects the multicultural fabric of the UAE. Companies are urged to adapt their hiring practices to align with these diversity goals to ensure sustained economic growth and social harmony.
