In a big weekend at the movies, Deadpool & Wolverine, the superhero comedy from Disney/Marvel, made about $54.2 million. The film has now earned over $1 billion worldwide, with $494.3 million from North America and $535 million from other countries. It joins Joker as the only R-rated movie to reach this milestone.
Sony’s romantic drama It Ends With Us also had a strong showing, pulling in $50 million from Friday to Sunday. This film, starring Blake Lively and based on a popular novel, is on track for one of the best openings ever for a romance movie, though Fifty Shades of Grey still holds the top spot with $85.2 million.
In third place was Twisters, a weather thriller starring Glen Powell and Daisy Edgar-Jones, which made $15 million. It dropped one spot from last weekend.
Lionsgate’s new video game adaptation Borderlands came in fourth with $8.8 million. Despite a cast including Cate Blanchett, Kevin Hart, and Jack Black, the film didn’t do as well as hoped and had a weak start.
Despicable Me 4 rounded out the top five with $8 million in its sixth weekend.
Here’s how the rest of the top 10 fared:
- Trap earned $6.7 million
- Inside Out 2 took in $5 million
- Harold and the Purple Crayon made $3.1 million
- Cuckoo brought in $3 million
