Karachi: Persistent delays in the lining of the B-Feeder canal have heightened fears of an impending water crisis in Karachi, with experts also warning of setbacks to the already delayed K-IV water supply project.

The K-IV project, a crucial initiative to enhance the city’s water supply, involves an investment of Rs40 billion, shared by the federal and Sindh governments. The project aims to boost the capacity of the Kalri Baghar feeder, which channels water from Kotri Barrage. However, progress on this essential development remains alarmingly slow.

From December 20 to January 13, work on the feeder was suspended for 23 days by the irrigation department, significantly impacting timelines. During this period, 45 outlets spanning eight kilometers were scheduled for completion, but only 25 outlets covering five kilometers were partially finished. The slow pace has raised red flags, particularly as the World Bank has conditioned its funding for the K-IV project on an increase in the feeder’s capacity.

The B-Feeder canal currently discharges 7,600 cusecs of water, but the project plans to increase capacity to 9,800 cusecs. To meet the World Bank’s requirements, the irrigation department has been tasked with completing the work by 2026, a year earlier than the original 2027 deadline. However, the project director has requested an additional Rs14 billion in funding to expedite work.

In response, Sindh Chief Minister has appealed to the federal government to ensure timely funding, with hopes of securing the required amount within 15 days. Despite these efforts, concerns remain as experts criticize the sluggish progress and fear the project may fail to meet its revised deadline.

Adding to the uncertainty, the appointment of the project director has been challenged in the Sindh High Court, further complicating matters.

The K-IV project, spanning 36 kilometers with 190 outlets, is critical for Karachi, a city already grappling with water shortages. Any further delays could exacerbate the crisis, making timely completion imperative.
