The European Union (EU) has announced the allocation of an additional €1 million in humanitarian aid to address the severe aftermath of the devastating floods that have recently wreaked havoc across Pakistan. These floods have impacted approximately 0.9 million people in several provinces, including Balochistan, Sindh, Punjab, and Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P).
Janez Lenarčič, the Commissioner for Crisis Management, has expressed the EU’s commitment to support the most vulnerable individuals and communities, especially in the face of climate change that has disproportionately affected Pakistan. This additional funding aims to assist these vulnerable populations as they endeavor to rebuild their lives after the tragic floods that inflicted immense suffering last year.
The €1 million in allocated funds will be strategically employed to provide multi-sectoral humanitarian assistance to both displaced individuals and those who have managed to return to their places of origin. Given the extensive damage to homes and essential services like water, sanitation, and healthcare facilities, this aid will play a pivotal role in supporting the affected communities. Importantly, the EU has pledged to continue its support throughout the upcoming winter season, ensuring that those in need receive the help they require.
Priority in the distribution of aid will be given to providing multi-purpose cash assistance, shelter, and non-food items to those severely impacted by the floods. This comprehensive approach aims to address the immediate needs of the affected populations and help them regain stability in their lives.
It’s noteworthy that this new funding comes in addition to the €16.5 million already allocated for humanitarian assistance to Pakistan earlier this year. The EU’s ongoing commitment underscores its dedication to aiding the most vulnerable populations affected not only by natural disasters like floods but also by conflict-related challenges. In these trying times, the European Union continues to stand by Pakistan, extending a helping hand to those in need and striving to make a positive impact in the region.
