In a significant step toward promoting sustainable transportation, the federal government has announced plans to install electric vehicle (EV) charging stations at all petrol pumps in Islamabad. This initiative is part of the government’s broader strategy to increase the use of electric vehicles (EVs) and reduce the country’s carbon footprint.
Under the plan, over 300 petrol stations across the capital will be equipped with fast-charging infrastructure, enabling EV owners to charge their vehicles conveniently while on the move. The first set of charging stations is expected to be operational by early 2025, with a phased rollout across all locations by mid-2026.
The government’s decision comes in response to growing demand for EVs and the need for a more robust charging infrastructure to support the transition away from fossil fuel-powered vehicles. This move is also aligned with Pakistan’s long-term goals to achieve a greener, more energy-efficient transportation network.
Officials from the Ministry of Climate Change have stated that the initiative will not only enhance the accessibility of EV charging points but also contribute to reducing air pollution, particularly in urban areas like Islamabad, where the rising number of vehicles is a growing environmental concern.
The installation of EV charging stations at petrol stations is expected to ease the transition for motorists considering switching to electric vehicles, while simultaneously encouraging more sustainable practices in the automotive sector.
