Tuesday morning, an improvised explosive device (IED) detonated on Warsak Road in Peshawar, leaving at least four children, aged 7 to 10, and an adult injured. The explosion occurred at 9:10 a.m., causing panic and chaos in the area.
Bilal Ahmad Faizi, the spokesperson for emergency rescue services, confirmed that the blast resulted in five casualties, with four of them being children. The injured were swiftly transported to nearby medical facilities for treatment. Two of the children are reported to be in critical condition, according to Mohammad Asim, a spokesperson for the Lady Reading Hospital in Peshawar.
Warsak Superintendent Arshad Khan revealed that the explosion took place near Peshawar Public School. He disclosed that the IED, disguised as a “cemented block,” contained approximately four kilograms of explosives. An ongoing investigation is being conducted by the authorities to determine the circumstances and identify those responsible for the attack.
Arshad Khan emphasized that it would be premature to ascertain the specific target of the blast at this point in the investigation. The area surrounding the incident was promptly cordoned off by security forces, securing the scene for further examination.
Despite the severity of the incident, Peshawar’s police chief, Mohammad Ashfaq Anwar, informed Reuters that there was no indication suggesting that school children were the primary target of the attack. As of now, no group or individual has claimed responsibility for the explosion.
The local community remains on edge as authorities work tirelessly to piece together the events leading up to the tragic incident. The implications and motives behind the attack are yet to be fully understood, heightening concerns about the security situation in the region.
