In a remarkable conservation effort, a freshwater Indian softshell turtle (Nilssonia gangetica) was rescued and safely released into its natural habitat at Taunsa Barrage.
The rescue operation was led by Javed Iqbal, a dedicated environmentalist, with the support of his local team. The turtle was found trapped in the barrage gauge upstream, a situation that posed a serious threat to its well-being.
Acting promptly, the team carefully captured the turtle, ensuring it remained unharmed throughout the process. Following a thorough health assessment, the turtle was released back into the river, allowing it to continue thriving in its natural ecosystem.
This successful rescue underscores the importance of preserving wildlife and protecting endangered species like the Indian softshell turtle, which plays a vital role in maintaining aquatic biodiversity.
“Protecting wildlife is a shared responsibility, and this operation highlights the power of swift and compassionate action,” Javed Iqbal stated, encouraging others to remain vigilant in safeguarding their local ecosystems.
Such efforts not only save lives but also serve as an inspiration for communities to support conservation initiatives actively.
