The Supreme Court of Pakistan has announced a full court reference for the outgoing Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP), Qazi Faez Isa, scheduled for October 25. A letter from the court’s registrar, addressed to Supreme Court Bar Association President Shahzad Shaukat, confirmed the date, marking the official farewell for CJP Isa upon his retirement.
Justice Mansoor Ali Shah is slated to succeed CJP Isa as the next Chief Justice of Pakistan.
Amid the preparations, rumours have circulated regarding potential government plans to extend CJP Isa’s tenure by amending the retirement age for superior court judges. Sources within the ruling coalition hinted at the possibility of legislative changes, though no concrete details have been shared.
Opposition parties, especially the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), have strongly opposed any such move. PTI founder Imran Khan has threatened nationwide protests if the government attempts to extend CJP Isa’s term.
In response to the speculation, CJP Isa informally addressed reporters, firmly denying any willingness to accept an extension, even if it applied to all judges. This statement contradicts earlier claims associated with the government. Following this, the Supreme Court issued a press release clarifying that the earlier conversation between CJP Isa and journalists had been inaccurately reported, urging the media to focus on institutions rather than individuals.
The full court reference will highlight CJP Isa’s contributions and service to the judiciary, as he prepares to step down by the end of the month.
