Lieutenant General Muhammad Asim Malik has been appointed as the new Director General of the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), according to an announcement by PTV News on its official X (formerly Twitter) account. Gen Malik will officially take charge of the position on September 30, 2024.
Currently serving as the adjutant general at the General Headquarters (GHQ) in Rawalpindi, Gen Malik will succeed Lt Gen Nadeem Anjum, who was appointed to the role in 2021 under then-Prime Minister Imran Khan.
Lt Gen Nadeem Anjum, commissioned in September 1988, has held various significant positions, including leading Corps V in Karachi, commanding a brigade in Kurram Agency, and heading the Frontier Corps (North) in Balochistan. His tenure as the commandant of the Command and Staff College in Quetta preceded his appointment as Karachi corps commander in December 2020.
Gen Asim Malik, promoted to the rank of lieutenant general in October 2021, has a distinguished military career. He has served in the Balochistan infantry division, commanded the infantry brigade in Waziristan, and held key instructional roles at the National Defence University in Islamabad and the Command and Staff College Quetta. Additionally, he is a graduate of Fort Leavenworth in the United States and the Royal College of Defence Studies in London.
PTV News highlighted that Gen Malik had been awarded the prestigious Sword of Honour during his military training, underscoring his exceptional leadership capabilities and service record.
