Google continues to refine its popular browser, Chrome, with its latest update geared towards improving multitasking capabilities on Android devices. In the recent rollout of update M124, developers now have the opportunity to seamlessly integrate “minimised custom tabs” into their applications, promising users a smoother browsing experience within apps.
The update, aimed at enhancing in-app browsing, introduces a convenient “minimise” icon when opening links, allowing Chrome windows to shrink into a floating square. For instance, when accessing a link from Gmail, Chrome opens at the bottom of the screen, giving users the option to expand it to full size or minimise it to a small square at the bottom right, easily accessible with a tap.
This feature ensures efficient and intuitive navigation across different apps on Android devices, ensuring that links open seamlessly with the new custom tabs. The streamlined design of these tabs offers a cleaner look, displaying only the webpage name and domain when minimised, often accompanied by the site’s logo or the Chrome logo if unavailable.
Moreover, the integration ensures users retain access to essential functionalities such as saved passwords and payment methods, mirroring the experience of using the main Chrome browser. Google initiated testing of this feature back in March with version 122, and while refinements are ongoing, the core functionality remains stable, aiding users in staying focused on their tasks.
However, it’s worth noting that these multitasking tabs currently do not support YouTube, which has its floating video feature. Google’s commitment to refining this feature underscores its dedication to continually enhancing the browsing experience for Android users.
