ISLAMABAD: The federal government has spent more than Rs 1.35 billion on security measures to control protests and maintain law and order in Islamabad, sources revealed.
The hefty amount was reportedly utilized for the deployment of police, paramilitary forces, and the procurement of tear gas shells, barricades, and other security equipment. The funds were allocated to counter various protest movements, including political rallies, sit-ins, and demonstrations held in the capital in recent months.
According to reports, a significant portion of the budget was used to cover allowances, food, and transportation costs for law enforcement personnel deployed in sensitive areas. Additionally, authorities have reinforced security arrangements around key government buildings and diplomatic zones to prevent any untoward incidents.
This expenditure has sparked criticism from opposition parties and rights activists, who argue that such massive spending on controlling protests highlights the government’s prioritization of security over public welfare. They claim that these funds could have been better utilized for addressing pressing economic and social issues.
Government officials, however, justify the spending, stating that ensuring peace and stability in the capital is essential to prevent chaos and safeguard public and private property.
The rising costs of security arrangements for protests have once again raised concerns about the financial burden on taxpayers and the government’s approach to handling dissent.
