The Punjab government has announced a strict ban on wall chalking across the province, vowing to take firm action against individuals and organizations involved in the defacement of public and private property.
According to an official notification, the decision aims to preserve urban cleanliness and visual order, as wall chalking — often used for political messages, commercial ads, and religious slogans — continues to mar cityscapes across Punjab’s towns and cities.
Under the new directive, municipal authorities and law enforcement agencies have been instructed to identify and remove all wall writings immediately. Those found violating the ban will face fines, legal action, and potential imprisonment under the Punjab Defacement of Property Act.
A spokesperson for the Punjab Home Department said the campaign is part of the government’s broader initiative to beautify cities and promote civic responsibility. “Wall chalking not only spoils the environment but also creates social and political divisions. This step will help promote a cleaner, more unified Punjab,” the spokesperson stated.
Public awareness drives are also being planned to encourage citizens to report offenders and support the initiative.
The government’s move has been widely welcomed by civil society groups and urban planners, who say that stricter enforcement is necessary to end decades of neglect and visual pollution across Punjab’s urban centers.
