In a decisive move, Defence Minister Khawaja Asif has declared stringent measures against unauthorized dissemination of sensitive information on social media platforms. The minister’s announcement follows the emergence of classified documents circulating on various social media channels.
Taking to X, formerly Twitter, Asif highlighted the gravity of the situation, emphasizing the potential damage to Pakistan’s diplomatic ties and strategic interests due to the exposure of classified materials.
“The spread of such information can seriously damage Pakistan’s relations with its friends and brotherly countries in addition to harming Pakistan’s strategic and economic interests,” stated the minister.
To combat this threat, the federal government has resolved to invoke the Official Secrets Act 2023, intending to prosecute individuals involved in the unauthorized disclosure of secret documents. As per the act, offenders could face up to two years of imprisonment along with fines.
This move by the government comes in the wake of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s approval of amendments to the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA) 2016. The proposed PECA Amendment Bill 2024 aims to regulate social media usage through legislation.
One of the key features of the amendment is the establishment of a Digital Rights Protection Authority under the Ministry of Information Technology. This authority is tasked with advising the government on digital rights matters, ensuring responsible internet usage, and enforcing regulations.
Moreover, the authority will collaborate with social media platforms to foster a positive digital environment, regulate online content, investigate violations of the amended PECA law, and take necessary action against offenders.
Empowered with the authority to demand information from individuals and witnesses, the proposed authority seeks to create a secure digital space while upholding user protection and fundamental rights online.
With these measures, the government aims to curb the dissemination of sensitive information on social media platforms and ensure a safer and more regulated digital landscape in Pakistan.
