“Quetta’s residents have long struggled with overcrowded and outdated public transportation, making daily commutes a challenge. Traffic congestion and environmental issues were only getting worse, with people spending hours stuck on the roads.
But on July 17, 2023, a new chapter began for the city. The Green Bus Service was inaugurated during the tenure of Mir Abdul Quddus Bizenjo, a project originally approved during the tenure of former Chief Minister Jam Kamal Khan. This state-run initiative brought modern, eco-friendly buses to the streets of Quetta, marking a significant step forward in public transportation.
Today, Approximately over 14,000 to 17,000 people benefit daily from this service, which runs from Balochistan University to Baleli. These clean, air-conditioned buses offer safe and comfortable travel for everyone, including women, students, and senior citizens. With a fare of just Rs40, the Green Bus Service is not only affordable but also a much-needed solution to the city’s traffic congestion.
As the Green Bus Service continues to grow, it’s important to consider the local bus owners who have served the city for years. The government should create opportunities for these owners to upgrade their fleets or collaborate within this new system, ensuring they too can benefit from the improvements in public transportation.
In the future, creating a mobile app to check bus schedules and track their real-time location could make the service even better. Also, adding more buses and expanding the routes will help more people use this reliable and efficient transportation system.”
The Green Bus Service is more than just a transportation solution; it’s a symbol of progress for Quetta. With continued investment, expansion, and support for local bus owners, it can become the backbone of a modern, sustainable public transport network in Balochistan.
Commissioner Quetta Division, Muhammad Hamza Shafqaat, has announced plans to add 25 more buses, increasing the daily capacity to 50,000 commuters. But the vision doesn’t stop there. To truly meet the needs of Quetta’s growing population, the service should expand to more routes, including Sariab, Qambrani Road, Sabzal Road, and Nawa Killi, where the majority of the working class resides.”
