Gwadar, January 20, 2025 – The New Gwadar International Airport officially commenced operations today with the arrival of PIA flight PK-503, marking a historic moment for Pakistan’s aviation and economic development.
The flight, which departed from Karachi at 9:50 AM carrying 46 passengers, touched down at 11:15 AM local time. Upon landing, the aircraft was honored with a traditional water cannon salute, symbolizing the significance of this milestone.
The inauguration ceremony was graced by Defence and Aviation Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif, Balochistan Chief Minister Sarfraz Bugti, and other dignitaries who extended a warm welcome to the first commercial flight.
PIA’s spokesperson highlighted the pride this event brings not only to Gwadar but to the entire nation, emphasizing the airport’s role in fostering economic growth, tourism, and enhanced global connectivity.
The New Gwadar International Airport, a key project under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), was constructed with collaboration between China and Pakistan’s Civil Aviation Authority (CAA). The Rs50 billion facility is equipped to handle large aircraft such as the Airbus A380 and offers advanced services for over 50 airlines daily.
Although flight operations were briefly suspended in February 2024 due to a 16-hour downpour, the airport has since been reinforced to ensure operational safety in adverse weather conditions.
The inauguration marks the beginning of a new era for Gwadar, solidifying its position as a regional hub for trade, tourism, and international connectivity.
