As preparations for the 2025 Hajj season officially commence, Saudi authorities have raised the lower part of the Kaaba’s kiswah — the sacred black cloth that covers Islam’s holiest site — by approximately three meters. The annual tradition marks the beginning of logistical and spiritual preparations for the pilgrimage, expected to welcome over two million worshippers from around the globe.
The raised kiswah, now temporarily replaced by a white cotton covering on the lower half, serves both symbolic and practical purposes. It helps protect the cloth from potential damage during the massive influx of pilgrims and highlights the sanctity of the site.
Officials from the General Presidency for the Affairs of the Two Holy Mosques confirmed that the operation was carried out by a specialized team under strict supervision, ensuring the preservation of the kiswah’s intricate embroidery and structure.
This move is one of several annual traditions that signal the countdown to Hajj, which is set to begin in late June. Authorities continue to implement enhanced measures to ensure the safety, health, and spiritual experience of all pilgrims during the sacred journey.
