Hamas has strongly condemned former U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent statement warning of severe consequences if Israeli hostages are not released, calling it a move that jeopardizes ongoing ceasefire negotiations in Gaza.
Trump, in a post on his social media platform Truth Social, declared that if Hamas does not comply with demands to free hostages, Gaza would be “DEAD.” Hamas spokesperson Hazem Qassem responded, stating that such threats embolden Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to ignore ceasefire agreements and continue military aggression.
“The ceasefire discussions require serious international mediation, not threats that fuel Israeli intransigence,” Qassem said, emphasizing that the group remains committed to a deal only if it ensures a lasting truce.
The fragile ceasefire, in place since January 19, has seen repeated tensions, with both sides accusing each other of violations. Hamas insists that further hostage releases will only occur under conditions that guarantee a permanent cessation of hostilities and the lifting of Israel’s blockade on Gaza.
International mediators, including Qatar and Egypt, have urged restraint and called for diplomatic dialogue. However, with Trump’s comments sparking fresh controversy, analysts fear a setback in peace efforts as tensions in the region continue to rise.
