The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has extended its rain forecast for Karachi, predicting a series of thunderstorms and heavy downpours from 27 to 31 August. The forecast has raised concerns about potential urban flooding, particularly in low-lying areas of the city.
According to the PMD, isolated regions within Karachi could experience very heavy rainfall, increasing the risk of water accumulation and flooding. Fishermen have been cautioned to take necessary precautions due to the possibility of rough seas during this period.
The alert comes as a monsoon system is expected to enter Sindh from 25 August. A low-pressure system currently situated over central India is moving westwards and is forecasted to reach eastern Sindh by the evening of 25 August or the morning of 26 August.
Under the influence of this system, Karachi is likely to witness intermittent rain, accompanied by thunderstorms and strong winds, from 27 to 31 August.
In addition to Karachi, other districts including Badin, Thatta, Sujawal, Hyderabad, Tando Muhammad Khan, Tando Allahyar, and Matiari are expected to experience rain with thunderstorms from 25 to 30 August.
The PMD has also forecasted heavy to very heavy rainfall between 26 and 30 August in Ghotki, Sukkur, Khairpur, Kashmore, Naushahro Feroze, and Shaheed Benazirabad districts. The department has warned that these downpours could lead to significant water accumulation in low-lying areas across these regions.
The risk of rough sea conditions has prompted further warnings for fishermen, advising them to adhere to safety measures during this forecasted period.
On Saturday, Karachi recorded a maximum temperature of 35.2 degrees Celsius, with humidity levels at 67 percent. Meanwhile, rural districts of Sindh continued to experience a heatwave, with Tando Jam recording the highest temperature of 39.5 degrees Celsius.
As the city braces for the impending weather, residents are urged to stay informed and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety during the forecasted period.
