In a recent escalation of tensions, the Houthi group based in Yemen has reportedly targeted an American oil tanker in the Gulf of Aden and American warships in the Red Sea. This announcement was made by the spokesman of Yemen’s Houthi armed forces, Yahya Saree, via Telegram on Sunday.
Saree did not provide specific details regarding the outcomes of these attacks. However, he stated that the assaults were in response to what the group perceives as aggression against the Palestinian people, as well as recent strikes by the United States and the United Kingdom in Yemen.
The United States confirmed an incident where an anti-ship ballistic missile, believed to be launched by the Houthis, was intercepted in the Red Sea. According to CENTCOM, the missile was launched on February 24 at 5 p.m. (Sanaa time) from Houthi-controlled areas of Yemen. It was likely aimed at the MV Torm Thor, a US-flagged chemical and oil tanker.
Fortunately, the missile was successfully intercepted by the USS Mason (DDG 87) without any injuries reported. The Houthis have previously targeted cargo ships in the Red Sea, particularly those owned or operated by Israeli companies or involved in transporting goods to and from Israel. This action is seen as a show of solidarity with the Gaza Strip, which has been under Israeli conflict since October 7.
Amidst the rising tensions, the Houthi group has declared that it considers all American and British ships as legitimate military targets. The situation remains tense as joint strikes by the US and UK continue against Houthi targets in Yemen, further fueling the conflict in the region.
