In a significant development, the Islamabad High Court has intervened in the electoral process, suspending the victory notifications of opponents of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) who were declared winners by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) in three National Assembly constituencies of Islamabad.
The bench, presided over by Justice Mian Gul Hasan Aurezneb and Justice Arbab Muhammad Tahir, entertained appeals challenging the victory notifications of NA-46, NA-47, and NA-48 constituencies.
The court particularly focused on NA-46, where the victory notification of PML-N’s Anjum Aqeel was suspended. Aqeel had been declared the winner, but this decision faced a challenge leading to the court’s intervention.
Similarly, in NA-47, the victory notification of PML-N’s Tariq Fazl Chaudhry, who had been declared the winner, was suspended. This move came after PTI-backed Shohaib Shaheen contested the decision, prompting the court to reevaluate the outcome.
Additionally, from NA-48, the victory notification of Raja Khurram Nawaz was challenged by PTI-backed candidate Zulfi Bukhari. As a result, the court decided to suspend the victory notification in this constituency as well.
This decision by the Islamabad High Court underscores the significance of due process and the judiciary’s role in ensuring fairness in elections. It sets the stage for further legal proceedings and potentially impacts the political landscape in the capital region. Stay tuned for more updates as the situation develops.
