Former Prime Minister Imran Khan has urged for an open court trial of ex-ISI Chief General (retd) Faiz Hameed, arguing that the case should not be treated as an internal military matter.
Khan emphasized the need for transparency in the trial, calling on the current army chief to support a public proceeding. He dismissed claims of his ongoing association with General Faiz, highlighting that the former intelligence chief became irrelevant after his retirement.
“General Faiz became insignificant after retirement. How could he benefit me in any way?” Khan questioned, refuting the idea that he maintains any contact with the former DG ISI.
The former premier further insisted that if General Faiz is indeed linked to the alleged May 9 conspiracy, then an open trial is necessary. He clarified that the incident is a local issue and not one that impacts national security.
Khan also expressed concern about the potential damage to Pakistan’s international reputation if he were subjected to a military trial. He argued that the matter involves a civilian leader and should therefore be resolved in a civil court, not a military tribunal.
On Saturday, Khan had stated that he does not feel intimidated by the arrest of Faiz Hameed, asserting that if he were afraid, he wouldn’t have called for a judicial commission.
The former prime minister also took the opportunity to criticize Nawaz Sharif’s recent claims that PTI had ruined the economy. Citing the Economic Survey of Pakistan, Khan countered these allegations by pointing out the $19.5 billion deficit left by the previous government, which necessitated PTI’s engagement with the IMF.
