Imran Khan, the chairman of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and former Prime Minister, expressed his contentment with the facilities provided to him at Attock District Jail. The acknowledgment came during a visit by Punjab Inspector General (IG) Prisons, Mian Farooq Nazir, who conducted an inspection of Khan’s conditions of detention.
Khan, who is currently serving a three-year prison term after being found guilty in the Toshakhana (gift repository) case, was reportedly in good spirits during the meeting with the Punjab police official. The IG Prisons, during the visit, inquired about the amenities and services available to Khan in the jail.
According to jail officials, special attention had been given to Khan’s privacy concerns. Cameras in his barrack were reviewed and their locations were adjusted to ensure his personal space.
In compliance with prison regulations, Khan was provided with essential items such as a bed, pillow, mattress, chair, and air-cooler. Additionally, the former premier had access to facilities including a fan, a designated prayer room, the Holy Quran with an English translation, reading materials, newspapers, thermos, dates, honey, tissue papers, and perfume.
The washroom in Khan’s confinement reportedly featured Western-style toilet facilities, a wash basin, soap, air freshener, towels, and tissue papers for his convenience.
Healthcare services were also prioritized for Khan, as five doctors were assigned to provide medical attention to him on a rotating basis, ensuring round-the-clock care during his incarceration.
A noteworthy aspect was the provision of special food to Khan, approved by the IG Prisons. Prior to being served, the food was examined by a doctor to ensure its quality and suitability for Khan’s dietary needs.
These developments come in the wake of concerns raised by PTI’s core committee approximately a week ago. The committee had expressed apprehension over Khan’s well-being, suggesting the possibility of sinister actions, including the administration of slow poison during his time in prison. The party had also voiced grievances about Khan’s inability to order food and water from home, which exacerbated their worries about his safety.
Furthermore, the PTI core committee had expressed dissatisfaction with the slow decision-making process regarding Khan’s transfer from Attock Jail to Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi. The party deemed the facilities at Attock Jail inadequate, considering Khan’s status as a former premier. The committee maintained that Khan’s imprisonment in Attock Jail was in violation of regulations.
The visit by the Punjab IG Prisons and Khan’s subsequent positive comments regarding his confinement conditions may influence the ongoing discussions and decision-making processes related to his detention location and overall treatment during his prison term.
