Islamabad, August 15, 2023 – In a significant development, an anti-terrorism court (ATC) in Islamabad has revoked the bail of former Prime Minister and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief Imran Khan in three cases. The verdict was announced by ATC Judge Abul Hasnaat Zulfiqar on Tuesday, citing Imran Khan’s absence from court proceedings as the reason for the bail cancellation.
Imran Khan had sought bail in two cases filed against him at Khana Police Station and one at Bharakahu Police Station. This comes in the wake of his arrest on August 5, 2023, following a district and sessions court’s decision in Islamabad to sentence him to three years in prison for failing to disclose details of Toshakhana gifts. The ruling, delivered by Judge Humayun Dilawar, was a result of a complaint lodged by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) against the former premier.
In his verdict, Judge Humayun Dilawar stated, “His dishonesty has been established beyond doubt… He has been found guilty of corrupt practices by hiding the benefits he accrued from the national exchequer wilfully and intentionally.”
Imran Khan’s incarceration in Attock Jail marks his second arrest within a span of three months. Furthermore, an ATC in Lahore recently dismissed his bail plea in seven cases, while an accountability court in Islamabad rejected his bail application in a 190 million pound graft case.
Since his removal from office through a vote of no-confidence in April 2022, over 150 cases have been registered against the former premier.
