A legal showdown looms in the Pakistani capital as a court in Islamabad has summoned Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan to appear today in a case related to his alleged ‘un-Islamic’ marriage with Bushra Bibi. However, complications have arisen due to security concerns raised by Attock Jail officials, who are currently holding Imran Khan as an under-trial prisoner in a high-profile cypher case.
The Attock Jail superintendent penned a letter to Civil Judge Qudratullah, who is tasked with overseeing the ‘un-Islamic’ marriage case against Imran Khan. In the letter, the superintendent cited Imran’s status as a high-profile under-trial prisoner involved in the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) Counter Terrorism Wing’s (CTW) cypher case under the Official Secrets Act. As a result, he argued that Imran should be exempted from appearing in the ‘un-Islamic’ marriage case.
Special Court Judge Abual Hasnat Zulqarnain is currently conducting the trial for the cypher case within the confines of the Attock Jail, further complicating Imran Khan’s potential appearance in the ‘un-Islamic’ marriage case.
In response to these developments, police sources have indicated that Imran Khan is expected to be produced before Judge Qudratullah in the ‘un-Islamic’ marriage case. They are prepared to provide a list of police officers deployed to ensure his security during the court appearance, as well as the number plates of Islamabad police vehicles responsible for his transportation to the court.
The sources have also confirmed that the interior ministry has been informed of these proposed security measures by the police in preparation for Imran Khan’s appearance in the court.
It remains to be seen how this security challenge will be resolved and whether Imran Khan will indeed appear in the court to face the allegations regarding his marriage to Bushra Bibi, which have sparked considerable controversy and debate in the country.
