Pakistan’s flood monitoring authorities have issued a high alert after India released a fresh wave of water into rivers flowing toward Pakistan, heightening the risk of flooding in downstream areas.
According to official reports, India discharged thousands of cusecs of water into the Ravi, Sutlej, and Chenab rivers, prompting immediate warnings to districts across Punjab and Sindh. The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) and provincial irrigation departments have placed rescue teams and machinery on standby.
Local administrations have been directed to evacuate vulnerable settlements along riverbanks, while residents are urged to move livestock and belongings to safer ground. Relief camps are being set up in low-lying areas as precautionary measures.
Officials warned that the sudden release of water could cause urban and flash flooding, particularly in southern Punjab districts including Kasur, Okara, Bahawalnagar, and Multan, with Sindh’s Sukkur and Ghotki regions also on alert.
This is not the first time India’s water release has triggered flood concerns in Pakistan. Authorities have reiterated calls for better transboundary water coordination under the Indus Waters Treaty, stressing the need for timely data sharing to avert humanitarian crises.
