In a shocking turn of events, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) revealed on Friday that the pace sensation Naseem Shah has been sidelined due to a shoulder injury sustained during the Asia Cup 2023 clash against arch-rivals India on September 11. The devastating injury has forced Naseem Shah to undergo surgery, setting his road to recovery at an estimated three to four months.
The news was officially confirmed by the PCB in a statement released today, coinciding with the announcement of Pakistan’s squad for the upcoming ICC World Cup 2023. The 19-year-old Naseem Shah, whose remarkable pace had made him a vital asset for Pakistan, will be replaced by the experienced Hasan Ali in the 15-member squad.
In a heartfelt message, PCB Chief Selector Inzamam-ul-Haq expressed his disappointment, saying, “Naseem Shah is a key bowler for us, but he’s injured. Unfortunately, the report we have from our doctors indicates that Naseem will be out for a longer time than just the World Cup. At this time, he was the world’s best bowler in my view. It’s a loss for Pakistan. We hope he’s fit soon.”
Despite the setback, Pakistan’s pace attack will still boast a formidable lineup, led by the talented Shaheen Shah Afridi. Afridi will be supported by Haris Rauf, Mohammed Waseem, and Hasan Ali, ensuring that the Green Shirts maintain their competitive edge in the tournament.
The squad for the ICC World Cup 2023 includes familiar faces, with Babar Azam at the helm. The team comprises Babar Azam (captain), Shadab Khan, Abdullah Shafique, Fakhar Zaman, Haris Rauf, Hasan Ali, Iftikhar Ahmed, Imam-ul-Haq, Mohammad Nawaz, Mohammad Rizwan, Mohammad Wasim Jnr, Salman Ali Agha, Saud Shakeel, Shaheen Shah Afridi, and Usama Mir.
While Pakistan faces a challenging road ahead without Naseem Shah’s bowling prowess, the nation remains hopeful for his swift and complete recovery, wishing him a speedy return to the cricketing arena.
