Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi announced on Monday during his visit to Pakistan that both nations have agreed to enhance their trade volume to $10 billion, emphasizing that the current level was inadequate. Raisi, on a three-day visit to Pakistan, made the declaration alongside Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif after their meeting in Islamabad, marking the first such visit by a head of state since Pakistan’s general elections on February 8.
Raisi expressed gratitude for the warm welcome extended by the Pakistani government and conveyed his regards to the Pakistani people advocating for the freedom of Al Quds Al Sharif (Jerusalem). Stressing the deep connections between the two countries based on shared faith and religions, Raisi underscored the importance of leveraging their potentials and capabilities for mutual benefit.
The Iranian president and PM Shehbaz agreed to bolster bilateral relations across political, economic, trade, and cultural domains. Both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to combat terrorism, organized crime, narcotics, and other security threats affecting their nations and the region.
Raisi highlighted Iran’s transformation despite international sanctions, offering to share its expertise and knowledge with Pakistan. Meanwhile, PM Shehbaz lauded Raisi’s leadership and Iran’s support on global issues, such as the Israeli offensive on Gaza and the situation in Indian-occupied Kashmir.
During the visit, eight agreements and MoUs were signed, covering areas like security, judicial assistance, economic zones, and film exchanges. Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar also met with Raisi to discuss bilateral relations and regional developments, emphasizing the need for peace and constructive dialogue.
Raisi’s visit holds significance as both countries seek to mend ties following tensions earlier in the year. Additionally, Pakistan hopes to resolve its power crisis through joint projects with Iran, including the long-delayed Iran-Pakistan gas pipeline, despite concerns raised by the United States.
