Suspected Israeli warplanes bombed Iran’s embassy in Syria on Monday. Iran says the attack killed seven of its military advisers, including three senior commanders. This is a big escalation in the conflict between Israel and its enemies in the region.
The bombing happened in Damascus, Syria’s capital. Reporters saw rescue workers trying to help, and a building in the embassy compound was destroyed. The Iranian flag was still hanging there.
Syria’s foreign minister and interior minister were at the scene too. They strongly condemned the attack, calling it a terrorist act.
The Iranian ambassador to Syria said the strike hit a part of the embassy where some of their officials lived.
Israel has targeted Iran’s military sites in Syria before, but this was the first time they hit the actual embassy. They’ve been increasing these strikes, especially after a conflict with a Palestinian group called Hamas in Gaza.
More than 32,000 Palestinians have died in the Gaza conflict according to reports.
Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps, which supports Syria’s president, said seven of their advisers died in this bombing, including a senior commander.
Israel usually doesn’t talk about these attacks, but some Israeli officials reportedly confirmed it.
Iran is very upset about the attack and called it a violation of international law. They want the UN Security Council to condemn it. Iran’s allies, like Hezbollah in Lebanon, are also angry and promising revenge.
Other countries, like Russia and some Muslim nations, have condemned the attack too.
The United States says they’re concerned about the situation but don’t expect it to affect talks about freeing hostages held by Hamas.
Iran’s Foreign Minister summoned a Swiss diplomat representing the US to complain about America’s support for Israel.
Experts are divided. Some think Israel is trying to prevent bigger conflicts by doing these strikes. Others worry it could make things worse, with groups like Hezbollah attacking Israel more.
