The Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR) Director General (DG) Maj-Gen Ahmed Sharif has outlined conditions for any potential dialogue with the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), stating that an apology, a commitment to constructive politics, and abandonment of anarchic practices are prerequisites.

During a press conference held in Rawalpindi, Gen Sharif emphasized the need for the PTI to publicly apologize for past actions, including attacks on military installations and the propagation of false narratives against the armed forces. He stressed that any dialogue should occur solely between political parties, excluding military involvement.

The remarks come ahead of May 9, a date marked by significant political upheaval last year following the arrest of PTI founder Imran Khan. Gen Sharif linked the events of May 9 to broader issues of justice and national security, calling for accountability and highlighting the need for trust in Pakistan’s justice system.

Responding to PTI demands for a judicial commission to investigate the May 9 incidents, Gen Sharif challenged the party to address historical grievances, including the 2014 dharna and attacks on state institutions. He emphasized the importance of investigating the funding sources and instigators behind such events.

Afghanistan Tensions and Counterterrorism Efforts

Gen Sharif also addressed recent tensions with Afghanistan, attributing the deadly attack on Chinese engineers in Pakistan to a plot orchestrated from Afghan soil. He condemned terrorism and vowed to bring perpetrators to justice, expressing frustration over Afghanistan’s alleged failure to act on Pakistan’s concerns regarding terrorist activities.

Highlighting ongoing counterterrorism operations, Gen Sharif provided insights into the security forces’ efforts to combat extremist threats in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan. He cited recent successes in neutralizing terrorist elements and emphasized the resolve to maintain peace and stability in the region.

Challenges from India and Support for Palestine

Regarding India, Gen Sharif warned of multiple threats and ceasefire violations along the eastern border. He accused India of targeting civilians in Azad Jammu and Kashmir and condemned its actions in Indian-held Kashmir, alleging violations of international law.

Gen Sharif reaffirmed Pakistan’s support for the Palestinian cause, emphasizing diplomatic and moral backing for Gaza. He pledged continued advocacy for Palestinian rights and called for international efforts to address the ongoing conflict.

Media Freedom and Repatriation Efforts

Addressing concerns about media freedoms, Gen Sharif defended the state’s stance against propaganda targeting national institutions. He underscored the importance of upholding truth and rationality while respecting constitutional limitations on freedom of expression.

Regarding the repatriation of illegal Afghan nationals, Gen Sharif highlighted the government’s decision to prioritize Pakistan’s interests by addressing economic and security challenges posed by undocumented immigrants. He disclosed significant progress in repatriation efforts while acknowledging the continued presence of Afghan refugees in Pakistan.

Overall, Gen Sharif’s statements reflect Pakistan’s multifaceted security concerns, emphasizing the need for dialogue, accountability, and regional cooperation to address ongoing challenges.
