Karachi, October 3 — Pakistan’s two largest metropolitan hubs, Karachi and Lahore, have once again been ranked among the most populated cities in the world, according to the latest global urban population report.
Karachi, with an estimated population exceeding 20 million, remains one of the fastest-growing megacities globally, facing immense pressure on infrastructure, housing, and public services. Lahore, home to nearly 14 million residents, has also climbed the list, reflecting rapid urbanization and migration trends in Pakistan.
Experts highlight that both cities play a central role in the country’s economy, yet uncontrolled population growth continues to strain resources, transportation systems, and environmental sustainability. Urban planners have warned that without effective policies, challenges such as traffic congestion, pollution, and housing shortages will intensify in the coming years.
Authorities have acknowledged the need for improved urban planning, mass transit systems, and sustainable development projects to meet the demands of the ever-expanding population.
The report places Karachi and Lahore alongside global megacities such as Tokyo, Delhi, Shanghai, and São Paulo, underscoring Pakistan’s growing urban footprint on the world map.
