Lahore experienced a much-needed respite from the scorching heat and humidity as light to heavy rain showers swept across the city, creating a more pleasant atmosphere for residents. According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), the monsoon rains have officially begun across Punjab and are expected to persist until August 29.
In response to the rain, the Managing Director of the Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) has instructed all operational staff to remain in the field to address any emerging issues promptly. Lahore’s Deputy Commissioner, Syed Musa Raza, has also activated all relevant departments, including assistant commissioners, WASA, and the Lahore Waste Management Company (LWMC), directing them to stay on high alert and be actively present in the field.
Raza emphasized the importance of immediate drainage of rainwater, particularly along critical routes, and instructed that all emergency camp staff and machinery remain fully prepared, with generators on standby. Additionally, he ordered that all screens at disposal stations be kept clear to ensure uninterrupted operations.
In a related development, a road sinkhole appeared near Bhekewal Chowk, opposite Farooq Hospital, along Dubai Mor. Deputy Commissioner Raza has specifically directed WASA officials to keep de-watering sets and machinery operational around the Chehlum procession routes and the vicinity of Data Darbar to prevent any disruptions.
DSP Achhra Muhammad Azam was present at the sinkhole site, where traffic was being diverted to the service road. The Lahore Traffic Police have notified the relevant authorities to address the situation promptly.
