The Lahore High Court has upheld the legality of former Punjab chief minister Pervez Elahi’s arrest by the Islamabad police. The verdict was delivered in response to a report submitted by the Punjab Police on Monday, confirming the lawfulness of the arrest.
The case was heard before a single-bench comprising Justice Mirza Viqas Rauf, who was addressing a plea filed by Pervez Elahi’s wife, Qaisara Elahi. Mrs. Elahi had sought contempt proceedings against Investigation DIG Imran Kishwar and Operation DIG Ali Nasir Rizvi for their involvement in her husband’s arrest.
The Lahore security SP presented a report during the proceedings, asserting the innocence of Investigation DIG Imran Kishwar and Operation DIG Ali Nasir Rizvi concerning the violation of a previous Lahore High Court order. This order had prohibited the authorities from arresting Pervez Elahi, who also serves as the president of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), in any new or undisclosed case.
During the hearing, both DIGs defended their actions before the court. They explained that they were in the process of escorting Pervez Elahi to his residence when they were intercepted by police officials who subsequently carried out the arrest. They emphasized that they had followed due process of law and had not intended to violate the court orders that mandated them to ensure Elahi’s protection.
This decision by the Lahore High Court marks a significant development in the legal proceedings surrounding Pervez Elahi’s arrest. It reaffirms the actions of the Islamabad police in detaining the former Punjab chief minister, dispelling any doubts regarding the legality of his apprehension. The case continues to draw attention due to Pervez Elahi’s prominent political role as the leader of PTI in a challenging political landscape.
