In a recent development, a Lahore High Court division bench, comprising Justice Aalia Neelum and Justice Farooq Haider, has recused itself from a petition filed by anchorperson Imran Riaz Khan. The petition challenges his physical remand in connection with a case of violence outside the Zaman Park residence of PTI founder Imran Khan.
During the hearing, Advocate Azhar Siddique represented the petitioner. However, the judges decided to recuse themselves from the case citing personal reasons. The bench has forwarded the file to the Chief Justice, requesting that the petition be heard by an appropriate bench.
The petition argues that the trial court granted the remand to the police without properly considering the facts of the case. It emphasizes that Imran Riaz Khan is not affiliated with any political party and was present outside Zaman Park as a media person to cover a peaceful protest.
Imran Riaz Khan’s petition calls for the High Court to set aside his remand and order his release. Previously, the Racecourse police had obtained a five-day remand of the anchorperson from an anti-terrorism court on March 1.
The investigation officer informed the court that the suspect had been named in the case based on witness statements. The officer stated that the suspect’s custody was necessary for further investigation, including a photogrammetry test. The court has directed the police to produce the suspect again on Wednesday.
It’s noteworthy that Imran Riaz Khan was recently granted post-arrest bail in a corruption case related to the contract of Dhrabi Lake in Chakwal by a special court for anti-corruption. The developments in this case are closely watched as it unfolds in the legal proceedings.
