In a significant development today, the Lahore High Court (LHC) issued a show cause notice to the Inspector General (IG) of Islamabad Police, in a habeas corpus petition filed for the production of former Punjab Chief Minister Pervaiz Elahi.
As proceedings resumed before Justice Muhammad Amjad Rafiq, he took a stern stance on the matter, issuing the show cause notice and directing IG Islamabad to produce Pervaiz Elahi before the Lahore High Court tomorrow. This move comes in response to alleged contempt of court related to Elahi’s case.
Earlier in the proceedings, Justice Rafiq had warned of potential notices or show cause actions against Deputy Inspector Generals (DIGs) of Investigations and Operations in a separate contempt plea. This contempt petition was filed by Qaisara Elahi, the wife of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) President Pervaiz Elahi. She sought contempt proceedings against the DIGs, accusing them of disobeying the Lahore High Court’s orders, which had restrained the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) and other authorities from arresting or detaining Pervaiz Elahi.
In a further development, Justice Rafiq presided over a habeas corpus petition and issued directives for the Inspector General of Police (IGP), DIGs of Investigations and Operations, the Chief Capital City Police Officer (CCPO) Lahore, Superintendent of Police (SP) Model Town Division, and SP Security LHC to appear in person at 2 pm.
The Lahore High Court’s actions in these matters reflect the judiciary’s commitment to upholding the rule of law and ensuring that court orders are obeyed. The upcoming proceedings and responses from the authorities involved will be closely monitored, as they may have far-reaching implications in the Pervaiz Elahi case and the broader legal landscape in Pakistan.
