In a key development within Pakistan’s intelligence and security apparatus, Lieutenant General Muhammad Asim Malik has officially taken over as the Director-General of the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI). His appointment marks a notable transition in the leadership of Pakistan’s premier intelligence agency.
Lt Gen Asim Malik is widely regarded as one of the Pakistan Army’s most competent operational commanders, known for his ability to tackle complex challenges through decisive and strategic actions. With an extensive background in operational intelligence, he has overseen various military operations and affairs, bringing a wealth of experience to his new position.
Before assuming his new role, General Malik held several critical commands, including leading the Infantry Division in Balochistan and the Infantry Brigade in Waziristan. His service record includes prestigious achievements, such as being awarded the Sword of Honour. He has also served as Chief Instructor at the National Defence University (NDU) and as an instructor at the Command and Staff College in Quetta.
The newly appointed ISI chief holds advanced qualifications, having graduated from the US Army’s Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth and the Royal College of Defence Studies in the UK. He has also contributed significantly to military strategy and operations while serving in the Military Operations Directorate.
Notably, Gen Asim Malik’s tenure as Adjutant General coincided with significant political turmoil, including the arrest of former Prime Minister Imran Khan. His leadership played a critical role during the subsequent unrest when Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) supporters staged protests, resulting in damage to public and military property.
A former military colleague has highlighted that Malik’s new appointment reflects the trust and confidence the military leadership has in his capabilities. His leadership is expected to influence key security and intelligence strategies moving forward.
Founded in 1948, the ISI is one of Pakistan’s most influential institutions, playing a significant role in the country’s political and security landscape. While it reports officially to the prime minister, the agency has historically wielded substantial influence over national security matters.
Lt Gen Asim Malik’s appointment is seen as a crucial move amid the evolving security dynamics in the region.
