The Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT) administration has begun installing M-Tag readers and advanced surveillance cameras at major entry and exit points across the federal capital as part of a broader effort to modernize traffic control and strengthen security.
According to officials, the initiative aims to improve traffic flow, reduce congestion, and enhance monitoring of vehicles entering and leaving the city. The newly installed M-Tag readers will automatically identify vehicles using electronic toll tags, while high-resolution cameras will record traffic movement in real time.
Authorities said the system will help law enforcement agencies track stolen vehicles, identify traffic violations, and respond more quickly to security concerns. By using automated technology, officials expect a reduction in manual checking, which often causes traffic delays, especially during peak hours.
The surveillance cameras are being connected to a central monitoring system, allowing traffic police and security agencies to observe road conditions, accidents, and suspicious activity from a single control room. This real-time data will also help manage traffic diversions during emergencies, public events, or VIP movements.
Officials added that the project is part of Islamabad’s smart city vision, focusing on the use of technology to improve public services and urban management. In the future, the system may be expanded to include automatic challans for traffic violations and better coordination with emergency services.
Residents have welcomed the move, saying it could help improve road discipline and overall safety in the city. However, some citizens have also called for transparency and data protection measures to ensure that vehicle and personal information remains secure.
The ICT administration has stated that more cameras and M-Tag readers will be installed in phases, covering all major roads and highways connected to Islamabad. Once fully operational, the system is expected to play a key role in making the capital safer, more organized, and more efficient for daily commuters and visitors alike.
