Pakistan’s beloved actor Mahira Khan recently disclosed that renowned Indian filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali had considered her for his Netflix hit Heeramandi over a decade ago. Speaking with BBC Asian Network’s Haroon Rashid, Khan shared details of this fascinating chapter in her life.
During the interview, the Bol actor revealed that the opportunity came unexpectedly. While attending her childhood friend’s wedding preparations in Bombay, she discovered through designer Rizwan Baig that Bhansali’s team was scouting for actors. At the time, Khan was working as a video jockey in Pakistan.
She recalled a last-minute meeting with Bhansali himself. “We spoke lots,” she said, adding that the director was enthusiastic about casting her in what was originally planned as a movie. However, political tensions between India and Pakistan ultimately prevented her from joining the project.
Khan later reunited with Bhansali when she worked on her Bollywood debut, Raees, opposite Shah Rukh Khan. Earlier this year, Bhansali himself mentioned considering other Pakistani stars like Fawad Khan and Imran Abbas for Heeramandi, but plans had to change.
Reflecting on Her Career
Khan described her career as a “crazy ride,” expressing gratitude for the journey her audience has shared with her. She said, “Nothing lasts forever, and this phase has been amazing. I look forward to doing different things and exploring new zones as an actor.”
Khan expressed interest in playing a single mother and shared her curiosity about how she might evolve with time. “Will I still dance in the rain or run in a saree? Who knows?”
The actor acknowledged the opportunities available to today’s actors and reflected on her role in paving the way for others. “I stand on the shoulders of those who came before me,” she said, adding that her unique position allowed her to open doors for others.
Khan emphasized professionalism and positivity, saying she always worked hard, avoided negativity, and celebrated others’ success. “I wish people did that for me when I was successful,” she admitted.
Marriage and Family
Khan also opened up about her marriage to businessman Salim Karim. Describing herself as a former “snob” about men, she said falling in love with Salim changed her perspective.
“I remember meeting him and thinking, ‘I’d marry this man,’” she shared, though it took her years to overcome her fears and take the leap.
She described her husband as flawed yet admirable, saying, “I am proud to be his wife. It feels like God put everything together and blessed me.”
Khan reflected on her life with her son, Azlaan, saying their family dynamic has grown to include Salim. Speaking about her wedding day, she said, “I wanted my son to walk me down the aisle, and he did. I was so proud of him.”
With her candid revelations, Mahira Khan continues to inspire fans, offering glimpses into her personal and professional milestones with grace and gratitude.
