The Islamabad High Court (IHC) granted bail to a man accused in a Rs3.20 billion sales tax fraud case, with a surety bond of only Rs100.
The court ruled that the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) had exceeded its authority by initiating criminal proceedings against the petitioner. IHC Justice Babar Sattar stated that the tax department failed to provide evidence linking the petitioner to the fraud and did not follow legal procedures regarding the tax dues.
The court also noted that the arrest viol@ted a Lahore High Court (LHC) verdict. The IHC directed that copies of both the LHC and IHC judgments be sent to the FBR Chairman, warning that any further viol@tions would result in action against the tax officers for mis-use of power.
