Birmingham, August 30, 2024 — Hassan Khebbeiz, a 59-year-old Syrian refugee, was found dead at his desk in temporary accommodation in Birmingham just one week after fleeing the conflict in Syria with his wife and two children.
Hassan, who had escaped the ongoing violence in Syria in search of a better life, was discovered by his wife, still clutching his Quran. The family had hoped to build a new life in the UK, but now face an immense and unexpected grief.
Hassan’s parents passed away when he was young, and his only remaining family, his brother and four sisters, are still in Syria. In the wake of this tragic loss, Oldbury-based Iqbal & Sons Bereavement Service has stepped in to cover the funeral costs through their free Muslim funeral program. The company described the situation as “heartbreaking,” noting that Hassan had only arrived in the UK a month ago before his untimely death.
An appeal has been launched to raise £3,700 for Hassan’s burial plot at Sutton New Hall Cemetery. The appeal has already surpassed its goal, raising over £7,400 in support of Hassan’s final resting place.
The fundraising appeal shared the story of Hassan Khebbeiz: “Hassan, a laborer from Damascus, Syria, had endured significant hardship and loss. After the death of his parents at a young age, he worked tirelessly to support his family. His journey to the UK was driven by hope for a new beginning. Tragically, his dream was cut short.”
The community’s generous response highlights the solidarity and support extended to Hassan’s family during this profoundly difficult time.
