Mar Galcerán has shattered barriers by becoming Spain’s first parliamentarian with Down syndrome, as reported by The Guardian. The 34-year-old, a member of the conservative People’s Party (PP), embarked on this groundbreaking journey after years of dedication and perseverance.
Galcerán’s political journey began at the age of 18 when she joined the PP. Slowly climbing the party ranks, she earned her place as the 20th candidate on the PP’s list for Valencia’s regional elections in May of last year. In September, she officially took her oath, marking a significant milestone for inclusivity in Spanish politics.
The historic achievement, however, has sparked both admiration and skepticism. While Spanish media hailed Galcerán as a trailblazer, some skeptics questioned her ability to perform the duties of a parliamentarian compared to her peers.
France’s Éléonore Laloux made history in 2020 as the first person with Down syndrome to hold public office, serving as a city council member in the northern town of Arras. Similarly, Ireland’s Fintan Bray, facing similar conditions to Galcerán, was elected to a political position in 2022. However, Galcerán’s accomplishment sets her apart as potentially the first person with Down syndrome elected to a regional or national parliament in Europe.
Agustín Matía Amor of Down España expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “It’s a huge step forward and an example of real inclusion. We haven’t heard of anyone else.” Galcerán’s more than two decades of civil service in Valencia, coupled with four years leading Asindown—an organization dedicated to assisting families with children having Down syndrome—underscore her commitment to public service.
Matía Amor emphasized the significance of Galcerán’s achievement, saying, “It’s both great news and a recognition of her work and the many initiatives she was involved in. It’s a good example of what is possible.” Galcerán’s groundbreaking role in Spanish politics serves as a beacon of hope for increased diversity and inclusivity in political spheres around the world.
