Lahore, October 16, 2024: In a controversial statement, Maryam Nawaz, Vice President of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), accused a political party of fabricating the recent rape incident that occurred in Lahore, calling it part of a smear campaign. Her remarks came during a press conference held at the party’s headquarters, where she condemned what she termed as “political exploitation of tragic events.”
The incident, which involved the alleged assault of a young woman in Lahore, had sparked widespread outrage across the country. However, Maryam Nawaz claimed that certain political elements, whom she did not name, were using the incident for their own gain, creating a narrative that undermines public trust and the efforts of law enforcement agencies.
“Unfortunately, some individuals are manipulating sensitive issues like rape for political leverage, which not only damages the reputation of our country but also disrespects the victim and her suffering,” Maryam said during the briefing. She went on to urge the public to be cautious of false information being spread and emphasized the need for proper legal procedures to be followed.
While the PML-N leader’s comments have drawn criticism from opposition figures and some civil rights activists, who argue that the focus should remain on justice for the victim, Maryam remained firm in her assertion that the incident was being “used” for political purposes.
Authorities have not yet commented on Maryam’s claims, but investigations into the rape case are still ongoing, with police promising to bring the perpetrators to justice.
