Yangon, Myanmar – A powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck central Myanmar on Friday, causing widespread devastation and triggering panic across the region. The tremors were felt as far as Thailand, India, and southwestern China.
Epicenter and Impact
According to the US Geological Survey (USGS), the earthquake’s epicenter was located near Mandalay at a shallow depth of 10 km, making the tremors extremely destructive. Several buildings collapsed in the city, while power outages and communication disruptions were reported across the affected areas.
Eyewitnesses described scenes of chaos as residents fled their homes in fear. “The ground shook so violently that we couldn’t even stand,” said a resident from Mandalay.
Casualties and Damage
Initial reports indicate multiple casualties, with dozens injured as buildings crumbled under the impact. Rescue operations are underway, and authorities fear the death toll may rise as more information emerges.
In addition to Myanmar, the quake’s tremors were strongly felt in Thailand, particularly in Bangkok, where buildings swayed, and residents rushed out into the streets. A high-rise under construction collapsed, killing at least three people and leaving several others missing.
Aftershocks and Warnings
Experts have warned of possible aftershocks in the coming hours and advised residents to stay away from unstable structures. Myanmar’s government has declared a state of emergency and is appealing for international assistance in rescue and relief efforts.
Regional Response
Neighboring countries, including Thailand and China, have placed emergency response teams on high alert. Humanitarian organizations are also mobilizing resources to assist the affected communities.
