In a significant move to address growing traffic congestion, the Capital Development Authority (CDA) has initiated the construction of a new underpass at the busy junction of Murree Road and Srinagar Highway in Islamabad.
The project, inaugurated by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, aims to provide a seamless and signal-free route from Islamabad International Airport to Muzaffarabad, offering much-needed relief to commuters traveling between Islamabad, Murree, and Azad Kashmir.
Currently, vehicles using Murree Road are forced to navigate the frequently jammed Dhokri Chowk to access the Srinagar Highway. The new underpass will bypass this bottleneck, significantly cutting down travel time and improving overall traffic flow in the capital.
CDA Chairman Mohammad Ali Randhawa stated that the underpass is being developed under the Serena Chowk Interchange project without issuing a new tender, ensuring swift execution and cost efficiency. The project is expected to be completed by mid-May 2025, with an estimated cost of Rs900 million.
To manage traffic during the ongoing construction and the groundbreaking ceremony, the Islamabad Traffic Police implemented a temporary diversion plan in nearby areas on April 17.
Once completed, the underpass will not only benefit residents of Islamabad and Murree but also facilitate tourists and daily commuters, marking a major milestone in the capital’s infrastructure development.
