KARACHI: The Majlis Wahdat-e-Muslimeen (MWM) sit-ins, which have paralyzed key thoroughfares across Karachi for seven consecutive days, saw a minor reprieve on Monday as Shahrah-e-Faisal reopened to traffic. Demonstrators moved their protest to another location, easing the city’s traffic woes slightly.
Traffic Relief on Shahrah-e-Faisal
Karachi’s traffic police confirmed that the previously blocked Shahrah-e-Faisal—from Natha Khan Bridge to various entrances of Malir—was cleared early Monday morning, providing much-needed relief to commuters.
Protesters Persist Across the City
Despite the reopening of Shahrah-e-Faisal, MWM organizers have emphasized that the protests will continue until the reopening of roads in Parachinar and the delivery of essential supplies, including food and medicines, to residents in the area.
Sit-ins persist at several key locations, including:
- Numaish Chowrangi
- Golimar
- Power House Chowrangi
- University Road
- Safari Park
- Abul Hasan Asfahani Road
- Five Star Chowrangi
- Ahmedabad Road
Additionally, areas such as Surjani Town’s KDA Flats, Ayesha Manzil, and Ancholi on Shahrah-e-Pakistan remain blocked by demonstrators. Protesters have also staged sit-ins at Gulistan-e-Jauhar’s Kamran Chowrangi.
Authorities Provide Alternative Routes
To mitigate disruptions, traffic police have designated alternative routes for commuters and deployed additional personnel across the city. Despite these measures, Karachiites continue to face significant challenges navigating the metropolis.
As the sit-ins stretch into their second week, the MWM’s demands for humanitarian support in Parachinar remain a central focus, with no immediate resolution in sight.
