Indian Olympic gold medallist Neeraj Chopra has addressed public perceptions surrounding his relationship with Pakistani javelin star Arshad Nadeem, stating that while the two share mutual respect as athletes, they have never been close friends.
In a recent interview, Chopra said, “We respect each other as competitors, but we are not close friends. People often make assumptions based on a few moments seen during competitions, but that doesn’t define a personal bond.”
The two javelin stars gained international attention for their sportsmanship during the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and later events, with many fans appreciating the camaraderie displayed between the two athletes from rival nations. However, Chopra emphasized that these moments should not be misunderstood.
“There’s always sportsmanship on the field, and I admire his talent. But we don’t talk often or have a personal friendship beyond competitions,” he added.
Both Chopra and Nadeem have represented their countries with distinction on the global stage, often finishing at the top in major events like the World Athletics Championships and Asian Games. Their mutual rivalry has been widely celebrated in both India and Pakistan, symbolizing hope and unity through sports.
Chopra’s remarks now offer clarity to fans who had often romanticized their interactions as a deep friendship. Nonetheless, the mutual admiration between the two remains a positive symbol in the world of athletics.
