The Punjab Prisons Department’s spokesperson has confirmed the construction of a new washroom with five-foot-high walls and a door for Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan at Attock Jail. The move follows concerns raised by Khan regarding his living conditions and privacy.
Additional District and Sessions Judge (ADSJ), Attock Shafquat Ullah Khan, found Khan’s complaints to be ‘genuine’ during a recent visit to his cell. In response, the prison has ensured that facilities under rules 257 and 771 of the Pakistan Prisons Rules, 1978 are now available to Khan. The spokesperson addressed the privacy concern by stating that the new washroom features a five-foot-high wall, a door, western commode, and wash basin. The prison has also taken steps to provide other amenities, including furniture, air conditioning, and medical attention. CCTV cameras installed outside the room have been positioned for both Khan’s security and overall jail security. The prison authorities have highlighted that more than 4,000 CCTV cameras are in place across various jails in Punjab for security purposes. Khan is currently serving a three-year sentence in Attock Jail due to his involvement in the Toshakhana case. His concerns about privacy, living conditions, and access to his family and lawyers have garnered attention. The PTI Core Committee has underscored the observations made by the ADSJ and advocated for improved treatment of Khan in Attock Jail. Meanwhile, caretaker Interior Minister Sarfaraz Bugti assured that Khan is being provided facilities according to the law.
